Understanding the towers and treasure of Chartres Cathedral
• A reference mark for other cathedrals. Chartres
Cathedral was the first of the ‘Classical’ Cathedrals in the 13th
century with tall windows. The quality of the sculpted decorations
means that it is a reference for Gothic art. It was placed on the
UNESCO World Heritage List due to the outstanding harmony of
architecture, sculpture work, and stained glass, which has been
celebrated by French authors such as Péguy and Claudel.
